Description
The Santa Clara Chamber of Commerce & Convention-Visitors Bureau is partnering with Explorer Scouts and the Boy Scouts of America Silicon Valley Monterey Bay Council to present "A Trip Down Reality Road - Your Path to Success". The day-long event will take place on Saturday, April 23 at Mission College. Scouting attendees will participate in workshops and have a "Bite of Reality" experience where they will learn what it means to balance a budget through purchasing items, paying rent, making car payments and much more!
We will need volunteers to assist with the event (from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.), especially for the "Bite of Reality" portion of the program. Bite of Reality is a hands-on simulation that appeals to teens while giving them a taste of the real-world financial realities. Teens are given a fictional occupation, salary, spouse and family, student loan debt, credit card debt, and medical insurance payments. The teens then walk around to various table-top stations to "purchase" housing, transportation, food, clothing, household necessities, day care and other needs. Fortunately, the game also includes a credit union to help with their financial needs. This activity requires 20 adult volunteers to staff the session, including at least 15 adults to play the role of various merchants. Here are the roles we are looking to fill:
- Housing (rental and/or purchase)
- Shopping (misc. items)
- Child Care (day care, after school, etc.)
- Household (utilities, household supplies, etc.)
- Entertainment (movies, plays, night on the town, etc.)
- Groceries/Dining (eat in or eat out)
- Transportation (own, lease, public transportation)
