INDIAN FESTIVAL LOHRI:
Lohri is a popular festival celebrated mainly in Northern India, especially in Punjab. It marks the end of winter and the beginning of longer days, celebrating the harvest season. Lohri is typically observed on January 13th.
Key Highlights:
Bonfire Celebration: The heart of the festival is a big bonfire around which people gather, sing traditional songs, and dance to the beats of drums (dhol).
Offerings to the Fire: People throw sesame seeds, jaggery, popcorn, and peanuts into the fire as a way of thanking nature for a good harvest and praying for prosperity
Music and Dance: Bhangra and Gidda (traditional Punjabi dances) are performed with lots of enthusiasm.
Food: Special foods like sarson da saag (mustard greens) and makki di roti (cornbread) is prepared and enjoyed with sweets like rewri and gachak.
Cultural Significance:
Community and Togetherness: It’s a time for family and friends to come together, especially to celebrate the birth of a child or a new marriage in the family. Symbol of New Beginnings: Lohri symbolizes warmth, happiness, and the hope for a fruitful year ahead.
